I don't remember when I completed this track but I think it was sometime in 2000. I know I was living on St John's Road in Glebe and that I was heavily under influence of Lou Reed's solo work of the early 70's. Particularly the album's 'Berlin' and 'Transformer'.
The vocal performance and lyrics were explorations of a vocal delivery technique employed by Laurie Anderson. I discovered by listening very closely to her excellent music and performances that by manipulating where you placed accents and how you positioned intonation, you could change the meaning of a repeated phrase.
The phrase used here suggests meaning but eludes it, remaining a playful phantom that I am yet to grow tired of. A proud moment in my own musical history. Thank you to Moritz von Alessandro for superb vocal skills.
lyrics
You can only come in time with something you’re watching
You can only come in time with something you’re watching
You only come in time when you’re watching
You only come in time with something you’re watching
